What to send with a steel tender

The drawings, specification, execution class and return date a steelwork estimator needs in order to price a package properly.

Four things, then the price can be real

Estimating can start from a phone call, but a price that you can hold needs four things: the general arrangement drawings, the engineer's specification, the execution class, and the date you need the tender back. Miss one of those and the number comes back with assumptions in it.

Add tonnage if you know it, and say whether erection is in the package. A supply-only price and a supply-and-erect price are different jobs. So is a mezzanine that someone expects to appear later.

For a main contractor

Procurement and the QS are usually checking two things at once: can this fabricator take the package, and will the paperwork survive a supply-chain audit. Send the drawings to info@steelstructuresni.com and ask for the CE certificate if EXC2 is the requirement. Early comments on buildability belong in design and pre-construction, before the frame is frozen and the only lever left is the price.

For a local builder

You may not have a full specification. Send what you do have: architect's drawings, a sketch of the span and height, and the week you want the steel standing. Say if you need the frame erected or only delivered to site. A portal frame for a unit, a small extension, or a mezzanine in an existing shed are normal enquiries for the Dunmurry office. Call 028 9030 1308 if the drawings are still moving.

Once the frame is appointed, Tekla detailing turns the general arrangement into fabrication drawings. That is the point where connections, holes and site welds get settled.
